Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions do podiatrists treat?

Podiatrists in Australia treat a wide range of foot, ankle and lower leg conditions, including:

  • Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Bunions and hammertoes
  • Diabetic foot problems
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis of the foot and ankle
  • Fungal nail infections
  • Corns and calluses
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Heel spurs
  • Provision of general nail care

Our experienced podiatrists at Dapto Foot Clinic are equipped to diagnose and treat these conditions and more. If you’re experiencing foot pain or discomfort, don’t hesitate to reach out!

How often should I see a podiatrist?

The frequency of podiatry visits depends on your individual needs:

  • For regular nail and foot care, most patients attend between 6 and 8 weekly.
  • If you have diabetes you should visit at least annually for thorough foot assessment. Most GPs in our area recommend 6 monthly.
  • For chronic conditions: Follow your podiatrist’s advised schedule, typically every 2-3 months.
  • Athletes: Consider bi-annual check-ups to prevent and manage sports-related foot issues.
  • Elderly Individuals: As we age, foot problems can become more prevalent due to changes in skin, nails, and joint health. Seniors might benefit from visits every 3 to 6 months to address issues like toenail care, calluses, and mobility concerns.
  • Children and Adolescents: Growing children may develop foot alignment issues or gait abnormalities. It’s advisable to schedule a visit if you notice any unusual walking patterns or if they complain of foot pain.

At Dapto Foot Clinic, we create personalised care plans to ensure your feet receive the attention they need. Contact us to schedule your next appointment and keep your feet healthy.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist in Australia?

No, you don’t need a referral to see a podiatrist in Australia. Podiatrists are primary healthcare providers, which means you can book an appointment directly with our clinic. However, there are some exceptions:

– If you want to claim a Medicare rebate under the Chronic Disease Management plan, you’ll need a referral from your GP.

– To be seen under Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), you must have a referral from a GP or medical specialist and hold a DVA Gold card.

– Under WorkCover in Australia, you typically need a referral from a GP to see a podiatrist for a work-related injury.

We welcome both direct bookings and referrals at Dapto Foot Clinic. If you’re unsure about your situation, give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have

Does Medicare cover podiatry visits?

Medicare does provide coverage for podiatry consultations in Australia, but there are specific conditions:

– Under the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, Medicare covers up to 5 allied health services per calendar year, which can include podiatry.

– You need a CDM referral from your GP to access these Medicare-covered services.

– The rebate is partial, so there will usually be out-of-pocket expenses.

– Specific podiatry services for people with diabetes may be covered under different Medicare items.

At our podiatry clinic, we can help you understand your Medicare benefits and any out-of-pocket costs. We’re committed to providing transparent pricing and helping patients from the Dapto region the access the care they need.

What's the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist?

In Australia, podiatrists and chiropodists both deal with foot, ankle, and lower limb conditions, but there are key differences rooted in terminology and professional standards. “Podiatrist” is the modern, officially recognised title in Australia, reflecting advanced education and a broad scope of practice. Podiatrists complete a university degree in podiatric medicine, covering a range of topics including biomechanics, pharmacology and minor foot surgery. They are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and must adhere to strict professional standards and continuing education.

On the other hand, “chiropodist” is an outdated term that has largely been phased out in Australia. It traditionally referred to practitioners focusing on basic foot care, such as nail trimming and treating minor ailments. Chiropodists may have trained under older educational frameworks that do not meet current Australian standards. The title “chiropodist” is not officially recognised by AHPRA today.
